Spring / Summer Time Hull Cleaning Schedule

During the warmer water season MAY – OCT we maintain our customers boats in a 3 weeks hull cleaning rotation in anticipation to the warmer waters.

This is the time where the boat owners will notice the increase of marine life activities and growth improvement due to the water temperatures.

At this time the most common marine growth we see is the Algae growth (CHIOROPHYTES – Green Algae / PHAEOPHYTES – Brown Algae / RHODOPHYTES – Red Algae) the Algae family likes the waterline and transom of the boat due the amount of sun light that this areas are exposed during the spring / summer time.

Another common type of marine growth is the Sea Animals which is the (POLYCHAETA – White Coral Worm and TUNICATE – Sponge like Organisms) The White Coral Worms usually attach deeply to the hull rather quickly on the warm water season, this can short the life span of the hull bottom paint when left there for a long period of time.

Doug started his love for the water when he was a kid, he grew up in the island called Florianópolis in South Brazil, surrounded with more than 40 beaches and bays. From an early age, he enjoyed the water and spent his free time surfing and diving on the island.

Douglas started to work on the boat industry here in San Diego back in 2004, We have more than 18 years of experience and knowledge working around boats in the greater San Diego area. His excellence in customer service and communication makes the company the most reliable and trustworthy of San Diego.

Diving Services

There is many reasons why you want your boat Hull clean at all times. Keeping the Hull of you boat clean will improve fuel consumption and performance of your vessel. Here at Performance Marine Services we will provide you with underwater inspection after each service is completed in your vessel we want to keep you updated on how is the condition of the bottom of your boat. Communication with our customer is our priority. Our Diving Services includes cleaning the whole bottom of the boat from the waterline down, metals cleanings, zincs replacement, Thru hulls etc.

Why should I paint the bottom of my boat?

Any boat that remains in a marine environment for any period of time will be colonized by marine growth, including algae, sponges, grasses, polychaetes, barnacles, mussels, and more.
To prevent or slow down this fouling, boat owners apply antifouling coating (Bottom Paint). There are three stages of hull fouling associated with marine growth and they are Bacterial Biofilm, which is microscopic and plugs the pores of paints, Algae film (Slime) which further plugs the pores, interferes with water flow across the hull and provides a good footing for the third stage, and invertebrates, the (hard growth), which causes significantly higher friction as boats move through the water. Such friction, or drag, increases the fuel cost for power boats and slows down sailboats. In addition, hard growth penetrates the surface of the paint, which contributes to the degradation of the paint.
